WHAT and WHY?
Klubben for Norske Formgivere (Norwegian Designers Union) is an initiative by designers
Victoria Günzler, Sara Wright Polmar and Sverre Uhnger.
As newly established designers we feel lucky to be part of an inspiring and positive network of young designers. Meanwhile there are currently few established meeting places and arenas for product and furniture designers in Norway.
Klubbens goal is to promote Norwegian product and furniture design, but also to increase fellowship and cooperation between designers and other industry players. We wish to encourage our members to continue working with the unions' purpose, for instance by organizing exhibitions and workshops.
Based in London she works on developing and making furniture and products. She combines her passion for drawings with furniture and continues to explore new areas of craft and making within the design process. She is also an exhibition designer and has worked for clients such as The British Council and The Norwegian Embassy. She is the founder and curator of Norwegian Prototypes, an annual exhibition for new Norwegian furniture design.

The main focus is the functionality, form and often humor when I ́m creating products, I enjoy experimenting with a variety of materials, though I am especially fond of using wood in my work.

I appreciate furniture that surprises and offers some sort of experience, i.e. movement. Construcion-wise I have a fascination for slim and flexible, but at the same time strong. Add metalcasting and steambent wood to the list, also not forgetting designs that can be produced locally or DIY - for resillience and future-proofing.

Common for many of my projects is some kind of visual illusion in the objects. I have done several projects with mirrors where I have worked on creating a surprising effect in the reflection. The OHH mirror from 2010 and the Tunnel mirror from 2009, are projects where I explored the possibilities of an altered reflection; creating something in the reflected picture that does not exist in “reality”. The Glow clock uses the reflected light of a strong color to create a “glow” and highlight the minute and hour hand of the time piece. Strong colors are also present in my Topp lamp for Established & sons and on the legs of the sofa TED.

I often start my design processes with an everyday situation, and I try to turn negative happenings into something positive. I am fond of secrets and small surprises, and I like objects that allows you to get to know them better over time. I hope the user of my products can sense another human being behind the objects.

As a designer I always try to be innovative, but I might be a bit old fashioned in my thoughts of design. For me a product has to be realistic and useful to be called good design. What I try to do is to combine these basic thoughts with new innovative ideas.

There is a sense of simplicity and functionality to Oscar's work that seems to dictate and drive the aesthetics alongside a keen interest in drawing and making. Simple materials, processes and structural elements are highlighted and become the focal point of many of his designs. He continues to develop and exhibit his own work and expand on his approach to design.'

My approach to design is practical and hands-on; I enjoy the qualities of materials - wood in particular, and I appreciate and get inspired by good craftsmanship. As a designer I try to create products that are interesting and inspiring, and that facilitates good experiences in their users everyday life. Humor and playfulness is important - design doesn’t have to be so serious!

Through the design process, I seek new ways to work with well-known objects and topics. The focus is often on making the invisible visible and to make the abstract more tangible. The goal is to encourage reflection, creating new patterns of behavior and to provide new experiences through absolutely (un)common everyday objects.

My products need to incorporate a key principle, this tends to be something with the function or the construction. I often use a key detail to form the base of the product and then build on this using my engineering background to create something that has both character and function.

I wish to be honest in my work and for this to be reflected in my choice of techniques and materials. Craft techniques inspire me, and their continuation is something I wish to participate in. I want my products to give people the opportunity to have an active relationship with the objects that surrounds them.
